Algorithms

What is an Algorithm?

An unambiguous set of steps, which when performed correctly by a processor, will result in a process being carried out in a finite time.

For example if you were to explain to someone how to make a cup of coffee you would be defining an algorithm;

1.    boil the water,
2.   place coffee in the cup,
3.   place sugar in the cup,
4.   add the boiling water,
5.   add milk,
6.   stir.

1.       Examine the algorithm above. What two properties of the algorithm enable it to correctly describe the solution to the problem of making a cup of coffee? What is it that makes an algorithm correct?(Hint: what would happen if you swapped step "6" and step "2"?)

2.    Define Algorithms for the following processes.

Making toast

·        Get the toast.

·        Put the toast in the toaster.

·        Get the toppings.

·        Put the toppings on the toast.

·        Eat it.

Posting a letter.

·        Get a pen and a paper

·        Write the letter.

·        Get an envelop.

·        Put the letter in the envelop.

·        Mail it.

Calling a friend on the phone

·        Dial the number on the mobile phone.

·        Press the call button.

·        And it rings.

Key Terms

Define the term Protocol: Computers set of rules governing the format of messages that are exchanged between computers.

What are the following protocols used for?

TCP/IP: Transmission Control Protocol

Http: Hyper Text Transfer Protocol: the standard protocol for transferring hypertext documents on the World Wide Web Compare HTML.

SMTP: Simple Mail Transfer Protocol: transferring e-mail messages over the internet.

Pop: Internet Post Office Protocol: brings e-mail to and from a mail server.

FTP:File Transfer Protocol: a software protocol for exchanging information between computers over a network.

What does GUI stand for? What was used before GUI?
Graphical user interface, PUI was used before GUI, contributed to information to technology and hardware.

There are two methods of data transmission – serial and parallel. Explain the difference between them.
A serial data transmission is when the data is sent in single elements were they are sent in different pathways. Where a parallel data transmission is sent as a total.

Define the term “URL”. Explain the components that make up the URL.
Uniform Resource Locator: a protocol for specifying addresses on the internet.
A Scheme
A Host
A Path
A Query string

In the context of data transmission, what is “error detection”?
Is the detection of errors caused by noise or other impairments during transmission from the transmitter to the receiver.

Name and explain one common method of error detection.
A hash function adds a fixed-length tag to a message, which enables reciveres to verify the delivered message by recomputing the tag and comparing it with one provided.

What is HTML and explain why it is important
Hypertext Mark-up Language is used to make webpage's.

History of the Internet

How did the internet originate?
The internet first started with the cold war and the fact that Russia was getting ahead with the technology than America. The U.S president at that time ; instructed to research into science programs ; one of these programs was in relation to the computer science were the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) was created. The aim of this was to build a network between four different computers. They were running on four different operating systems.

Who were the people most responsible for creating it?
ARPA were responsible for creating it.

What system immediately preceded the internet? What was its purpose?
The internet was created as a project in 1958 by the United States Government ARPA to network computers in order to gain technological and potentially a military advantage over the Soviets in the middle of the cold war.

What is an IP packet? What is it comprised of?
The IP is responsible for addressing hosts and routing datagram's (packets) from a source host to the destination host across one or more IP networks. For this purpose the IP defines an addressing system that has two functions :
  • identifying hosts.
  • providing a logical location service
This is accomplished by defining standard datagram's and a standard addressing system.

What does TCP stand for?
TCP means Transmission Control Protocol.

How does TCP deal with lost IP packets?
The TCP deals with the lost IP packets by being able to recover using TCP.

Why do computer people like everything in letters?
They might find it easier to remember as well as shorter to type and refer to.

Credit Rating Presentation

In class, Farah, Christine and I did some research about credit rating and presented it to the class.
These are the first 3 slides. They basically just tell us what credit rating is and why database is involed in credit rating.

Slide 4 and 5 describe what ways it can be misused by the people and describes what type of data is stored.

Slide 7 8 and 9 just tells us the leagal responsibilities and the responsibilities of maintaining the database.

Database Definitions

1. provide a basic definition of each.

FIELD-Field is a space allocated for a particular item of information. For example a student ID. It has your name and your ID number and date of birth.

RECORD- A record is a complete set of information on someone. For example you may have a criminal record on something that you may have stolen.

FILE- Data makes up a file. A file is a collection of data or information that has a filename. Almost all information stored in a computer must be in a file. There are many different types of files: data files, text files program files, directory files, and so on. Different types of files store different types of information.

QUERY- A Query is choosing parameters from a menu. In this method, the database system gives a list of parameters from which you can choose. This is perhaps the easiest way to pose a query because the menus guide you, but it is also the least flexible.

DATABASE- Database software is used for a number of reasons in any industry - from keeping your bookkeeping on task, compiling client lists to running your online Web site.

REPORT- A report is a formatted and organized presentation of data. Most database management systems include a report writer that enables you to design and generate reports.

DBMS- Stands for "Database Management System." In short, a DBMS is a database program. Technically speaking, it is a software system that uses a standard method of cataloging, retrieving, and running queries on data. The DBMS manages incoming data, organizes it, and provides ways for the data to be modified or extracted by users or other programs.

DATA DICTIONARY- A data dictionary is a file that defines the basic organization of a database. A data dictionary contains a list of all files in the database, the number of records in each file, and the names and types of each field. Most database management systems keep the data dictionary hidden from users to prevent them from accidentally destroying its contents.

DATA TYPE- A data type in programming, classification of a particular type of information. It is easy for humans to distinguish between different types of data. We can usually tell at a glance whether a number is a percentage, a time, or an amount of money. We do this through special symbols -- %, :, and $ -- that indicate the data's type. Similarly, a computer uses special internal codes to keep track of the different types of data it processes.
